Staff Reporter, StateScoop & EdScoop

StateScoop & EdScoop seek an experienced reporter to cover technology at state and local governments, as well as universities across the country. In this position, based in Washington, D.C. or remote, you will have the opportunity to report on how governments and higher education institutions use technology to serve their users.

You’ll have the chance to tell compelling stories about the biggest issues facing government and universities today — privacy, blockchain, technology modernization, artificial intelligence and more.

The ideal candidate is a source-building communicator dedicated to the pursuit of truth and obsessed with getting to the details. We’re looking for a digital storyteller hungry to break news and tell stories about the people and technologies that will define the future of the field.

This position comes with massive potential as both brands continue their growth. We’re looking for a self-starter, team player and leader looking to help build these two dynamic publications.

As a Staff Reporter you'll:
  • Build relationships with CIOs and technology leaders from across the state, local and education (SLED) community with a focus on fresh story ideas and coverage of the unique combination of how people and technology are redefining the industry
  • Write multiple stories each day — from short news items to in-depth investigative features — that are delivered on the fastest growing news sites in the SLED community
  • Contribute to — and create — long-term editorial projects that demonstrate the impact of technology in the field across multiple platforms
  • Host and produce multimedia storytelling opportunities for the brands, like podcasts and videos
  • Work with editorial leadership to help expand the way we’re telling stories and building community
  • Continue the rapid growth of the StateScoop and EdScoop brands by participating in events, moderating panels, developing an expertise in your subject matter and more
  • Work with the Scoop News Group team to create multi-platform content
Qualified applicants, at a minimum, have:
  • Four years of professional daily journalism experience as a reporter or editor
  • Familiarity with technology — with a preference for information technology as well as higher education and/or government, particularly the big issues facing the community
  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Impeccable communications and organizational skills
  • Strong knowledge of social media strategy, SEO, multimedia journalism, AP Style
Position Salary Range: $60K - $90K
